Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose the right counsellor for me?
A good way to begin the process of finding the right counsellor is to decide whether you will be more safe and comfortable with a man or a woman. You can also look for a counsellor who specialises in a particular issue you are currently experiencing, or a psychotherapist who is practising a therapy technique you think will suit you. The most important thing is to find someone you feel comfortable with.
Where can you see me?
I work from Cottesloe and Attadale (near Applecross). If you would like to make an appointment at any of these locations, you can contact me here.
Do you work after hours?
I offer after-hours appointments on a Monday evening in Attadale and a Thursday evening in Cottesloe. I am happy to talk to you about a time that will suit you.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No, you don’t need a referral. You can contact me directly and organise a time to see me.
What can I expect from my first session?
The first session is very informal. It is just like a conversation. It is also a chance for you to find out if you feel safe and comfortable with me. I will ask you (and your partner, if you are a couple) questions about yourself and what brings you to therapy. We may talk about what you are hoping to achieve by having regular therapy.
How long does a session go on for?
50 minutes.
How long do I need to be in therapy?
It really depends. Therapy isn't a quick fix. It is a commitment. Some people feel relief immediately but choose to continue therapy because they find it helpful. Others may spend six months to a year in therapy to work through a specific issue. It depends on the person and the problems they face.
Is what I tell you confidential?
Absolutely. Everything you tell me is confidential unless subpoenaed by law or I suspect you are at risk to yourself or others.
Can I claim private health insurance?
Yes, I offer rebates for some private healthcare providers.
Can I claim medicare rebate?
Unfortunately, I cannot offer medicare rebates.
I am a student or low-income earner. Do you offer discounts?
Yes. I offer discounts to students and low-income earners. I also offer rebates through several private health providers.
What if I have to cancel an appointment?
If you need to cancel an appointment, this is absolutely fine. As I run a busy practice, I ask that you give ample notice so that your spot can be re-booked to someone else. If you cancel inside of 48 hours the session is fully chargeable.
